250 Years of Military Chaplaincy in the United States

Submission deadline: rolling from November 1, 2024 through July 1, 2025. 2025 marks the 250th Anniversary of military chapliancy in the United States. Both the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps and the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps were established in 1775. We are interested in scholarship that either looks back at that history, ahead to the future, or both. We invite papers that look back at our history. We especially solicit work that critically re-examines key aspects of that history and original research that opens up underdeveloped histories. Those histories to which we want to call attention include discussions of low-density faith groups as well as other under-represented groups of chaplains including BIPOC chaplains, women chaplains, and LGBTQ chaplains. We also invite papers that address potential future challenges such as the pivot to preparation for Multidomain operations, the development and use of AI systems (especially in kill chains), significant changes in religious demographics, the impact of a return to the draft, the inclusion of atheist or humanist chaplains, religious nationalism, and legal challenges to military chaplaincy. A diversity of perspectives and broad range of disciplinary approaches is highly encouraged. US Air Force and Navy, multinational chaplains, and civilian scholar submissions are encouraged. Please submit original research or best-practice oriented papers of no more than 4,000 words (inclusive of footnotes) or book reviews of no more than 1,500 words to the author submission portal Papers received after the deadline will be considered on a rolling basis.
